The EPSB Weekly – Women’s and Open Series Titles Won

Home » The EPSB Weekly – Women’s and Open Series Titles Won

It was yet another very busy weekend of action on the EPSB scene with seven competition winners crowned at several different venues.

Women’s Tour

During the opening weekend of the inaugural EPSB English Women’s Snooker Tour held at Scotties in Liverpool, two reigning EPSB event winners – Rebecca Kenna and Emma Parker – claimed main event titles.

Women’s Open champion a few weeks back, Kenna received a bye before defeating Steph Daughtery 2-0. In the last four she fell behind early on, but made breaks of 48 and 40 on her way to recording a 3-1 win over Jamie Hunter.

The final would be a rerun of the Women’s Open title match from Leeds as Mary Talbot-Deegan continues to enjoy her return back to the competitive circuit. In the other semi-final tie Talbot-Deegan crafted breaks of 51 and 32 whilst denying Chrissy Allwood 3-1, despite having dropped the first frame.

There was a quality start to the final as Kenna produced a 54 to help go ahead, although Talbot-Deegan responded with a 53 as she levelled up with frame two. However, Kenna finished the stronger, chalking up the next two for a 3-1 success.

Players returned the next day and it was reigning English national women’s champion Parker going home with the event two top prize.

Parker defeated Michelle Baker and Emma Brown both 2-0 before eliminating Daughtery 3-2 after Daughtery came back from 2-0 down. In the deciding frame the eventual champion compiled a 35 break.

In the opposite chair for the final was the consistent Talbot-Deegan who saw off Cath Bailey 3-0 in the last four. Talbot-Deegan would have to settle for the runner-up prize again, though, as Parker top scored with 38 in a 3-0 triumph.

Despite losing in both main event finals, Talbot-Deegan can be consoled by going to the top of the rankings list.

In the Challenge Events for those that lost their first match in the main events, Jan Hughes recovered from losing the opening frame to defeat Emma Brown 2-1 in the final of Saturday’s tournament. On Sunday, Allwood was the winner when she saw off Brown 2-0 in the climax.

EPSB Open Series

The latest events on the EPSB Open Series were won by Chae Ross, Oliver Brown and Ryan Davies.

At Breakers Snooker Club in Leicester, Ross made several break contributions as he defeated former event finalist Andy Marriot, James Height and David Jobling before registering a run of 64 in the first frame of a 3-0 win over Halim Hussain in the final.

Oliver Brown had an ideal preparation for his upcoming visit to the EBSA European Championships when he totted up a string of sizeable breaks to take the title at Cueball Derby.

A former English Amateur Tour event winner last season, Brown dispatched current English under-16 champion Paul Deaville 3-2, Simon Seabridge 3-0, Jeremy Lee 3-1 and then recent professional player and former English Amateur Championship winner Brandon Sargeant 3-0 in the final.

Brown was in very impressive scoring form making breaks of 101, 102 and 140 throughout the day. Shaun Wilkes – who was pipped by Sargeant in the last four – also scored a century with 115.

Teenager Davies made it consecutive Open Series victories at the Tradewell Snooker Club in Hull.

The former number one under-21 ranked player in the country was the last cueist remaining from the 37-player entry. He defeated Kristian Willetts 3-0 (84 break), Sean McAllister 3-1, Kayden Brierley 3-0 (77 & 60 breaks), professional player Farakh Ajaib 3-1 (86 break) before overcoming maiden Open Series finalist and former professional Jamie Curtis-Barrett 3-0 in the final.

Davies is now on a 10-match winning streak at the venue and he becomes the first amateur player to have won multiple Open Series titles. This latest triumph pushes him to the top of the rankings.

Sanderson Lam made the tournament’s highest break with an effort of 110.
