Home » Carty is English Amateur Tour Champion in Leeds

Ashley Carty defeated Daniel Womersley 4-1 to win the second English Amateur Tour event of the season at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.

The 30-year-old dropped just four frames across six matches and also compiled the tournament high break of 143 as he romped to victory at the iconic West Yorkshire venue.

A total of 78 players contested the two-day event and Carty’s competition began in the last 64 stage where he whitewashed two-time ranking event winner Tony Knowles.

Carty was in tremendous scoring form and breaks of 57, 76, 57, 75 and 110 helped the former World Snooker Tour (WST) professional to back-to-back 4-1 victories over Edward Jones and George Pragnell.

His strong opening day performance was followed up in style as Carty compiled a top contribution of 133 en route to a devastating 4-0 quarter-final win over recent WPBSA Q Tour Europe event winner Peter Lines at his home club.

A stunning 143 clearance, the sixth-highest break at a national EPSB event since 2019, moved Carty 2-0 ahead in the semi-finals against Craig Steadman without his opponent scoring a single point.

Steadman, the recent EBSA European Seniors champion, was able to take frame four to keep his hopes alive but it proved to be too late as Carty took the next to set up a title match meeting with Womersley.

Womersley had reached the third English Amateur Tour event final of his career by overcoming Simon Blackwell (4-3) and Callum Beresford (4-0) on the Sunday and had earlier fired in an impressive break of 142 on the opening day.

The two finalists traded the opening frames as Carty took the opener with help from a visit of 50 before Womersley restored parity with a 107 break – the 18th century of the competition.

From there, however, Carty pulled away and took three frames on the bounce to complete a 4-1 victory and secure a first English Amateur Tour title in three years.

The English Amateur Tour continues with event three at The Crucible Club in Reading on 29-30 November. Enter now via WPBSA SnookerScores.
