The first-ever EPSB Women’s Snooker Open Day was held last Saturday at the Landywood Snooker Club in Walsall with over 30 women and girls involved throughout the day.
Organised by national governing body the English Partnership for Snooker and Billiards (EPSB), in partnership with Nomination Italy and T.H.Baker, the day welcomed women and girls from England and Wales for a wide range of snooker activities.

Aimed at people of all levels of experience, whether they had never picked up a cue before or are regular players already, the day began with an informal ‘meet and greet’ during which people were able to share their experiences.
The action began with an introduction by BBC Sport’s Shabnam Younus-Jewell, who herself has competed on the World Women’s Snooker Tour, and spoke about her own experiences in snooker so far.

She was joined by leading English players and WPBSA Snooker Coaches Rebecca Kenna, Tessa Davidson and Zoe Killington for a panel discussion and Q&A session, which included practical advice on how to attract sponsorship and how to handle pressure in the game.
Participants were subsequently invited to take to the table and receive practical coaching advice, either side of a free buffet lunch, before enjoying a series of fun 6-red scotch doubles matches to complete the day.
Each player was presented with a special goodie bag presented by Nigel Oliver representing sponsors Nomination Italy and T.H.Baker, which also included special vouchers donated by Cue Sports Yorkshire and World Women’s Snooker merchandise.

Matt Huart, EPSB CEO said: “What a wonderful day we had in Landywood! It was both inspiring and humbling to see so many women and girls taking their first steps into snooker, with the help of our regular coaches and regular players.
“We know that it can be intimidating for those taking their first steps into the game and the barriers that exist, who may feel that they are not good enough. But our message is just to give it a go, whether in your local club or at a national competition, you might just find that snooker is the game for you.
“I would like to thank our wonderful sponsors for the day, Nomination Italy and T.H.Baker, without whom it would not have been possible, as well as our hosts at the Landywood Snooker Club.
“Also, to our coaching team, as Rebecca, Tessa and Zoe were fantastic throughout the day and helped all the participants feel at ease and welcome. Their panel discussion contained some valuable messages that can only help to inspire those present to engage further with our sport.”

Tessa Davidson, EPSB Player Director said: “The day couldn’t have gone better and was hugely inspiring for us all.
“It was clear to see how much everyone enjoyed it and I am sure that they all took something away from the day to progress their snooker. It has been heartening to see the reaction on social media and how some of those present have already been inspired to continue playing in local clubs going forward.
“I am sure that we will see more players competing at tournaments going forwards with days like this and I am already looking forward to the next one!”
