New League Referee Qualification Launched

Home » New League Referee Qualification Launched

The English Partnership for Snooker and Billiards (EPSB) has today announced the launch of a new League Referee course as part of its expanding referee training and qualification programme.

Aimed at supporting English snooker referees who want to officiate at grassroots level within their local league structure, the course incorporates the core elements of our new Class 3 qualification, including access to online resources and safeguarding and child protection training.

The announcement follows the launch of the EPSB’s League Registration Programme earlier this week, with registered leagues having direct access to the qualification at a discounted rate. The course will be delivered by an experienced delivery team including Brendan Moore, Jan Verhaas, Glen Sullivan-Bissett and Paul Bannister.

Course Details

Delegates will be required to meet set pre-course eligibility criteria prior to being allowed on the course, including providing a basic disclosure criminal record check (£23.00) and achieving a pass rate on a self-assessment online entry examination.

The course itself includes:

  • Referee training i.e. the current Rulebook
  • Online safeguarding and child protection training

All training and assessments are delivered online, and the course includes EPSB membership for one year, including access to the official EPSB Referees Facebook Group.

The course costs £74.99, discounted to just £39.99 for delegates nominated by a registered EPSB league. We advise anyone currently active within a league to contact their league to confirm whether it is registered with the EPSB and eligible for this discount.

Simon Berrisford, EPSB CEO said: “We are today delighted to be able to launch our League Referee qualification, which will go hand in hand with our League Registration programme announced earlier this week.

“This year has seen us undertake a significant overhaul of the referee training and qualification structure in this country, with the launch of our new Class 3 course so far proving to be extremely popular with over 250 applications received.

“We do also appreciate, however, that not every referee wishes to progress to officiate at professional or elite amateur level and that it is just as important that our many successful leagues across the country have access to qualified officials. It is for this reason that we have created this additional course within our existing structure, and we are confident that it will only help to ensure that all aspiring referees are given the opportunity to officiate in our sport.”
